Trauma

Permissive Hypotension

Description:
The dogma in trauma resuscitation for the last forty years has been fluid, fluid, fluid.  However there is a growing body of literature that too much fluid may be bad for patients suffering from hemorrhagic shock.  This session discusses the background for high volume resuscitation, reviews the pathophysiology of hemorrhagic shock, and describes the physiology behind permissive hypotension in trauma resuscitation.

Objectives:

  1. Describe the history of fluid use in trauma resuscitation
  2. Understand the pathophysiology of hemorrhagic shock
  3. Understand the rationale for limiting IV fluids during trauma resuscitation
